hi. i am ana boskovic freund from split, croatia. a friend of mine forwarded
your message to me.
i am active in some ecological groups in my town and i could say i
am vegetarian for ecological reasons.
i used parts of your text, together with parts from some nature/science
magazines, to make an info poster
with big letters, which i put in the window of my friends´ health
food store, so that passers-by can read it-
for a few days. i hope it could make at least one
person, one day, prepare a different lunch...
although our people are very conservative and stubborn.
your text, divided in parts and easy to read, was of big help.
many best wishes to you from a b f !
Hello there!
Thanks for your email and Veg Fact Sheet which had many interesting websites. We too have been very busy for World Vegetarian Day.
Some of the things we have done are:
1. Sent A4 size posters, information and recipes to the Libraries around
NZ asking them to do a display for World Vegetarian Day Week. Some of the
libraries - from various areas such as Kaitaia, Auckland Central, Palmerston
North have asked for more for the display they will be doing.
2.World Veg Day dinners are being held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with Christchurch Centre holding a stall in the Square on Friday. Nelson is having a combined stall with SAFE on Saturday.
3. We have sent a Press Release with some facts on Vegetarianism to Newspapers around NZ plus some local radio stations. We have been contacted by some newspapers as a result wanting more info or an interview. Our Christchurch Centre also has an interview booked on a local television station.
4. We have an advertisement booked in the University magazine called Craccum for this week. Each year we choose a magazine or newspaper to spend money on a reasonable advertisement for World Veg Day and this year it is Craccum.
Hope this is what you wanted to hear about what we are doing. As always, we could do with more help to accomplish sending out more veg info etc but feel this is a reasonable effort for the workers involved.
Have a Happy World Vegetarian Day and keep in touch!
Regards
Fiona

[HEALTH] A Day Without Meat
Vegetarians celebrate an animal-free holiday
nly a year after the first World Vegetarian Day celebration in Seoul,
the nation's veggie movement is taking off in leaps and bounds. With
some 17 groups scheduled to participate, this year's events delivered even
more energy and enthusiasm, starting with a vegetarian festival on Sept.
22. The performance at Seoul National University included original works
of dance, music, theater and mime by the newly formed Earth- love Vega,
a vegetarian club whose members aim to address serious issues in a lighthearted
way. The next day, a wide array of groups representing environmental, religious,
health, animal protection and other concerns, as well as several vegetarian
food companies, gathered in Seoul Station Square for a huge celebration
led by the Korea Vegetarian Union (KVU). On both days, of course, delicious
food was served in generous quantities.
The diverse groups, ranging from the Buddhism Environmental Education Center to Green Korea United, share a common goal: raising awareness about vegetarianism and its benefits to humans, animals and the planet. Lee Kwang- jo, the KVU's leader, advocates this lifestyle primarily for six reasons. Respect for animals is one; another is concern for human health, the environment and starving people. Lee pointed to the vast amount of land and resources that must be used to grow animal feed, suggesting that many more people could be fed if society moved toward a plant-based diet. Two final reasons - spiritual benefits and the potential to create a more peaceful society - are especially important to Lee, who said he believes vegetarianism is a small but important step in creating a world that respects life.
Lee said interest in vegetarianism is growing in Korea, especially since the KVU's inception in 1998. He said the organization has helped many people remain vegetarian, as well as helping lapsed vegetarians resume their practice by providing information and support on the KVU Web site. On World Vegetarian Day, Sept. 23, the organization distributed free Korean-language booklets detailing the reasons some people choose an animal-free diet. The focus for the day, Lee said, was a new campaign calling for vegetarian options in school lunch programs, starting at the elementary school level. Recently, this issue has received a great deal of media attention, he added, explaining that many children are horrified when they learn that meat comes from dead animals, and that some refuse to eat it. However, in Korea, where children start school at 8 a.m., often missing breakfast, and where most schools have mandatory lunch programs with no vegetarian options, the only alternative for many is plain white rice, Lee said. A diet consisting primarily of white rice, which has had almost all its nutrients removed, will of course lead to health problems, Lee said, adding that the lack of options can also lead to teasing by peers. Since it's easy to provide vegetarian meals, he contends, and since such options are readily available in school lunch programs in other countries such as Taiwan, the KVU is urging the Ministry of Education to change legislation that currently mandates animal protein in school lunches and to provide meatless meals for those who want them. Petitions circulated at the event - once 10,000 signatures have been collected, the organization will approach the government with its request.
Compared to that in Western countries, the face of vegetarianism is slightly different in Korea, Lee said. In Korea, it's generally difficult to find vegetarian options in most restaurants, and there hasn't been much support for the lifestyle until recently. He said that in the past, Korean vegetarians were most often motivated by religion, but that the focus is now shifting to concern for animals and the environment. Yet Lee said spirituality is still important to many vegetarians in this country, and the experiences of several Earth-love Vega members seem to bear this out.
Jeon Sang-joon, a 28-year-old civil engineering student at Hanyang University, founded Earth-love Vega in December 2000 to fill a need that, in his view, wasn't being met by existing vegetarian groups. Member Mira Koh said it offers a different atmosphere and, for the most part, serves a younger age group: Those who attended a recent meeting ranged in age from 22 to 35, and many were college students just starting out as vegetarians. Most cited compassion for animals as their main reason for choosing a vegetarian diet, although the group also shares the KVU's environmental and health concerns. Among those who cited spiritual influences were Koh and Jang Hyun-hwee, 22. Jang was raised in a Buddhist household and questioned the ethics of eating meat at a young age, but said spirituality wasn't a big influence in his life until this year, when he became involved with the SM Meditation Center, a nonsectarian group that requires abstinence from meat and alcohol. The group helped him quit smoking and drinking, he said, and he adopted a meatless diet in accordance with its teachings. Although he is no longer involved with the center, Jang has maintained his healthier lifestyle and remains committed to vegetarianism. "Now I'm vegetarian for my health, and for animals," he said.
For Koh, 35, it was a long change. A women's studies lecturer at Ewha Womans University, her feminist views played an important part in her journey. Five years ago, when she met the feminist philosopher and vegetarian Alison Jagger, Koh was intrigued, but the philosopher's views on the subject "didn't make much sense" to Koh. Over many years, Koh became interested in Buddhism, practicing Zen Buddhism for a time and studying different spiritual paths. She also became interested in ecofeminism and explored the connection between humans' oppression of animals and the sexual slavery of women. Yet in the beginning, her interest in ecofeminism was mainly intellectual and didn't affect her eating habits. It wasn't until 1999, when her dog fell seriously ill and Koh was forced to end its life by euthanasia, that Koh was prompted to think seriously about animal issues.
"Most people don't change by logic," she said, adding that logic must be proceeded by an emotional response. Following her dog's death, Koh felt guilty and didn't want to be responsible for the deaths of any more animals. At that time, the debate about dog meat was in the news, and she wrote an article explaining her opposition to using dogs for food. At the time, however, she didn't extend this policy to other animals. It wasn't until last year, while taking an ecofeminism course and studying the works of Carol Adams, a well-known U.S. feminist vegetarian advocate, that Koh became a vegetarian. She began to write about the oppression of women and animals, and her work was eventually published in the journal of the Korean Academic Society of Women's Health.
The transition was difficult for Koh, who believes that her dog's death made her more sensitive, and she began to feel that "humanity was such a barbarian species." She also found it difficult to change her practices in spite of her convictions about animals. The experience made her "less radical" as a feminist, she believes, because she could understand how difficult it must be for men to understand women's oppression. Koh now believes that the way to change society is not by criticizing, but by trying to "make people open-minded and warm-hearted." For example, she believes that engaging foreign support for an anti-dog meat campaign is "not a good strategy" on the part of some Korean animal advocates, since it generates so much hostility. When she spoke out about the issue, she was surprised to encounter opposition from Korean feminists, but her writings about vegetarianism have had the opposite effect, she said. People are not upset at all and acknowledge that her point of view is valid, although some find change difficult and a few are even afraid to read her articles. Still, she believes her work has influenced a number of people, and that people are becoming more open to vegetarianism.
Overall, the members of Earth-love Vega seem to favor an approach that is nonconfrontational and passionate at the same time, and this was undoubtedly reflected in their performance. Noh Tae-bok, 32, said the group isn't interested in forcing its views on others, but that it gives members a chance to share their experiences as vegetarians in a nonvegetarian world. The performance, he said, addressed not only the health, environmental and animal welfare implications of meat-based diets, but also a broader issue: what he calls the "meat-eating culture" and its impact on people's attitude toward living beings. Noh took part in several skits during the festival, including one titled "Funny Cooking Classroom," which satirized this attitude in a scene involving a shrimp and a sadistic chef. Student Baka Jai-hong, 23, performed two original rap songs in Korean, entitled "Veggie Power Changes the World" and "Meat Is Murder" (not to be confused with the classic 1980s hit of the same name by the U.K. band The Smiths); and actress Park Ga-ah, 23, directed a series of comical scenes that showed the difficulties of everyday life as a vegetarian - conflicts with family and lack of choices in restaurants were just a few of the featured themes.

Here's to veges
26 September 2002
October 1 is World Vegetarian Day in New Zealand, but as feast days go, this celebration is still a movable event.
In Ireland they hold it on September 29, and in the United States it
swings between September 29
in Los Angeles, to October 5 in Seattle, and October 13 in San Francisco.
Not that it matters. World Vegetarian Day only made it to international calendars in 1977, so some leeway is still happening.
For many people, food is the first step in a lifestyle change. Interesting recipes, accessible ingredients, and a growing number of cafes and restaurants featuring vegetarian dishes are part of today's daily diet.
It is a long way from the 1960s when "peace-love-and brown rice" was the sole domain of the fringes of hippiedom and Asia-by-bus travellers.
Meadow Mushrooms and eight Christchurch cafes are supporting this year's World Vegetarian Day with a 10-day "mushroom special" promotion.
Customers ordering the dish are eligible for T-shirt prizes.
Participating cafes are Blue Jean Cuisine, the Honeypot Cafe, The Cup, Dux de Lux, Galileo's Cafe, Waterfront Cafe, Under the Red Verandah, and Club Bazaar.

Dear JTC prabhu,
PAMHO! AGTSP!
Today I recorded a 1 hour cooking show for Perm TV. Perm is the capital
city
of the Ural region of Russia and a city of 1.5 million.
I am travelling for 1 month throughout Russia teaching cooking at temples,
for congregation and Friends of Lord Krishna, in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod,
Perm, Sochi and Divnamorsk on the Black Sea.
The show will go to air on World Veg Day, as will a nice radio interview
about prasadam. The people of Perm are extremely receptive and very
very
fond of prasadam. The temple runs a cake factory and produces gorgeous
cakes
for the whole city - 2000 big cakes a month. The cakes are for sale
in
practically every shop in the city with exotic names like Vrindavana,
Lalita, Visakha etc. The cakes have to be seen to be believed - very
professionally iced and decorated, filed with multi layers of cream
and jam,
biscuit and fruits - many varieties.
Tomorrow I will send you some photos of the TV shoot and hopefully of
the
cake factory.
Prasadam Ki jai!

Attached is a poster we are putting around the area. We are also distributing a similar leaflet into letter boxes. The programme is coming together nicely due the mercy of my dear Srila Gurudeva with Bhakti Marg and family doing a drama, Kirtana by Sripati, Maryanne and girls, & Sundara Gauranga, dance by a friend Claire, singing by Narayana Rishi, a play by the Gurukula, a story with sound effects (audience participation), poetry, face painting by Hari Priya, and a finale by Paul from the rock band PanAm ending by joining with Sundara Gauranga in kirtana. There may be more participation but this is what I have that's definite at the moment. There will be food tasing rather than a full feast (too much for me to organise this time) and Puhoi Cheeses, Lisa's Hummus and a couple of other companies are making donations of vegetarian fare. There will be books on display and Hari Priya is making some huge banners. The venue is very nice and new with a great kitchen.

Please accept my obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
I wanted to tell you that the London temple had a very good afternoon

interested people came and we were able to preach to them. Hare are
the
tangible results:
1050 plates

GBR £430 for FFL
We have many nice stories of the people we met and preached to. One
man went
passed as we were distributing the prasadam, he didn't stop to take
a plate,
but just recently he bought a book from one of our book distributors
because
he saw the devotees and had a developed a favourable impression of
us. So
now through Srila Prabhupada's mercy he is beginning his journey home!
We are planning to have another event on the disappearence day of Srila

prasadam, more books and have longer harinama.

October 1 – World Vegetarian Day Celebration

the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of a vegetarian diet.

on October 1 and enjoy a free entrée with the purchase of another
entrée of the same or greater value! We will have for sale limited

The Food Revolution is a compelling and thoroughly documented discussion
of how a shift to a vegetarian diet can improve our personal health, the
health of our planet and the plight of animals. Reservations requested
for this evening no later than September 28. Other promotions, discount
cards, membership based discounts, etc. not applicable this night.
